“…From the very beginning, everyone was so compassionate, caring, respectful, and professional during such an incredibly difficult time for our family. “My fiancé was out of town visiting family and had a medical emergency. Unfortunately, he did not survive. I drove 11 hours to handle the arrangements and hopefully see him to say goodbye. R Regina S. Google review

OUR PROMISE OF CARE

Identified and accounted for, at every step.

When you trust us with someone you love, you should know where they are and who is caring for them. Our chain-of-custody process keeps your loved one identified from the moment we arrive until they come home to you.

  1. STEP 1

    Identified from the first moment

Before we leave the place of passing, your loved one receives an identification band with their name and a unique case number.

  2. STEP 2

One case number, start to finish

That number follows your loved one on every document, every transfer and every step, so nothing is ever left to memory.

  3. STEP 3

    Resting safely in our care

Your loved one rests in a secure, climate-controlled area at our funeral home, where only our licensed staff have access.

  4. STEP 4

    Every document checked

Nothing moves forward until your signed authorization and the cremation permit required by Illinois law are in place and verified.

  5. STEP 5

    One cremation at a time

Each cremation is performed individually at a licensed Illinois crematory. A stainless-steel ID disc stamped with the case number stays with your loved one throughout.

  6. STEP 6

    Returned to you with care

Cremated remains come home labeled with their name and the same ID disc, and are released only to the person you have authorized.

CASE NO. 26-0417 ILLINOIS

THE ID DISC

A small disc that never leaves their side.

A stainless-steel ID disc, stamped with your loved one’s case number, stays with them through cremation and comes home with them, so you can be certain.

Questions about cremation in Logan Square and Avondale

Straight answers about cost, timing and paperwork. If your question is not here, call us at (773) 866-2273, day or night.

How much does cremation cost in Logan Square and Avondale?

Direct Cremation starts at $997. Every cremation also carries the Cook County permit ($200), the state-required alternative container ($160), a temporary urn ($25) and sales tax on those two items. Certified death certificates are optional ($40 for the first, $20 for each one after). Following a hospital death, the usual total is $1,400.96. Our pricing page has a calculator if you want to check your own numbers.

Which office handles the paperwork for a death in Logan Square and Avondale?

Logan Square and Avondale are in the City of Chicago, which is in Cook County, so the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office issues the cremation permit and certified copies come through the Cook County Clerk. You do not need to contact either office yourself. We file the permit, register the death certificate with the state and order your certified copies.

How long does a cremation take?

For most families in Logan Square and Avondale, the cremation is completed within 5 to 10 business days. The schedule depends on how quickly the family signs the authorization, when the Medical Examiner approves the cremation permit, and when the death certificate is completed. If you need things to move faster, optional expedited cremation is available for $150.

Does our family have to visit a funeral home in person?

No. You can arrange everything online in under 15 minutes or over the phone at (773) 866-2273, and a visit is never required. If you would like to meet in person, our funeral home is at 3521 N. Pulaski Rd., a short drive from Logan Square and Avondale.

Is water cremation available here?

Yes. Water cremation, sometimes called aquamation, is available from $1,897. Instead of flame, the process uses water; it is gentler on the environment and usually gives the family about 20% more cremated remains than flame cremation. With the same permit, container and urn as a typical hospital case, the typical total is $2,300.96.

What if the death was sudden or unexpected?

Call 911 first. When a death is sudden or unexpected, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office may need to review it before your loved one can be released. Once you have chosen Caring Cremations, call us, and we will coordinate with the Medical Examiner, arrange the transfer as soon as release is given, and keep you informed along the way.

Can we arrange a cremation in Spanish?

Yes. Our team can help Spanish-speaking families by phone at (773) 866-2273, and our Spanish-language page, Cremación en Chicago, explains our prices and steps in Spanish.

My father is at Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital. What happens if he dies there?

Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital, at 2233 W. Division St., is in Cook County, so the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office issues the cremation permit. Let the nursing staff know Caring Cremations is your provider, then call us. We arrange the transfer from the hospital and handle the permit. A hospital death usually does not involve the $295 immediate removal charge.

BEFORE YOU START

What to have ready before you arrange a cremation

Arranging online takes most families under 15 minutes. A few details close at hand make it easier, and anything you do not have yet can be added later with our help.

Most of what we ask for is needed for the death certificate. If you are unsure about something, call us at (773) 866-2273 and we will tell you what can wait.

HELPFUL TO HAVE
  • Your loved one’s full legal name and date of birth
  • Where the death happened, and the facility’s phone number
  • Parents’ names, including the mother’s maiden name
  • The name of the person who will authorize the cremation
  • Military discharge papers (DD-214), if your loved one served
HELP IN SPANISH

Help in Spanish, and a funeral home close by

If your family is more comfortable in Spanish, call us at (773) 866-2273 and we will go through everything with you in Spanish. Our Spanish-language page, Cremación en Chicago, also walks through our prices and steps.

Our funeral home at 3521 N. Pulaski Rd. is a short drive from anywhere in Logan Square or Avondale. You never have to come in, but you are welcome to sit down with us there, and our Family Farewell option gives your family a private hour together before the cremation.

AFTER THE CREMATION

Planning a memorial after cremation

Because a direct cremation has no service beforehand, many Logan Square and Avondale families hold a memorial later, once relatives can travel and the first hard days have passed. It can be as simple as a gathering at home or as planned as a service at your place of worship.

If you would like a private goodbye first, our Family Farewell option ($1,997) gives your family an hour together at our funeral home before the cremation. Families who want a full visitation beforehand can choose cremation with a visitation, which starts at $4,950.
