Wayne John
Fugel
Dec 11, 1957 — Apr 6, 2025
Wayne John Fugel, known affectionately to his friends and family as Wayne, passed
away peacefully on April 6, 2025, in Berwyn, Illinois, at the age of 67. Born on
December 11, 1957, in New York, Wayne's zest for life and his infectious laughter left a
lasting impression on all who knew him.
Wayne was a proud US Navy veteran, having served his country with dedication before
embarking on a career as a long-haul tractor-trailer driver—a job he adored for the
opportunity it gave him to explore cities and states across the country. His passion for
the open road was rivaled only by his love for building and racing cars. From a young
age, Wayne had a talent for constructing race cars from the frame up, creating not only
vehicles for himself but for friends and family, sharing his passion with those he loved.
His family remembers him as a pillar of strength and love. Wayne is predeceased by his
parents, Vivian and Walter Mantell, and his sister, Judith Fugel Battaglia. He leaves
behind his loving sister, Maureen Fugel Cotroneo, and his loving son, Shawn
Fugel.Wayne's warmth and passion for life continued to touch the hearts of those
around him.
Wayne's interests went beyond his work and hobbies. He was a man who cherished the
simple pleasures in life, such as spending time with his friends and family. His poker
nights were legendary, filled with laughter and friendly competition. Wayne had the rare
ability to turn an ordinary evening into a treasure trove of memories, a testament to his
loving and funny nature.
Those who knew Wayne would say he was a man of great passion. Whether it was his
dedication to his craft, his patriotic service, or his devotion to his loved ones, Wayne
approached every aspect of life with a fervor that inspired others. His laughter was
contagious, his smile bright, and his stories captivating. He lived his life with a sense of
humor and warmth that drew people to him, making him a cherished companion and a
beloved figure in his community.
In the words of Albert Einstein, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile," a
sentiment that Wayne embodied every day. His willingness to lend a hand, share his
expertise in car building, or simply offer a joke to brighten someone's day exemplified
his commitment to living for others. Wayne's legacy is one of joy, compassion, and an
unquenchable enthusiasm for life.
Wayne's life was a journey filled with adventure, laughter, and an abundance of love. As
we bid farewell to a man who was truly larger than life, we take solace in the countless
memories he leaves behind. His spirit, a beacon of joy and passion, will continue to
shine in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Wayne John Fugel will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the stories
told, the cars that roar down the track, and the echoes of his laughter in the places he
cherished. As we honor his memory, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey
well-traveled, and a man well-loved. Rest in peace, Wayne; your journey here may have
ended, but your story will continue to inspire.
