Obituary

Thomas William Soukup, known affectionately by all as Tom, embarked on his final adventure on the 28th of August, 2024, after a life well-lived and full of laughter. Born on a chilly winter's day in 1951, in Berwyn, IL, Tom quickly warmed the hearts of those around him with his kind and friendly nature.

Tom's journey began as a young man at Proviso West High School, where he learned the fine art of balancing a textbook in one hand and a wrench in the other. His knack for all things mechanical led him down a path of hard hats and steel, working as a Steelworker and Crane Worker, and later in the Printing and Bindery industry. Tom was the kind of guy who could find the humor in even the most ironclad situations, and his coworkers never had a dull day with him on the job.

Married for a whopping 51 years, Tom and his wife Pam Kasperek Soukup were a dynamic duo. Together, they navigated the rollercoaster of life, with Tom always ensuring there was more laughter than screams – unless, of course, they were screams of laughter. His brother Alan Soukup, nephews Stephen and Christopher Soukup, niece Ashley Soukup, sisters-in-law Debbie and Laura Kasperek, and niece Michelle Zimmerman made up the rest of his cheer squad, each of them treasuring the countless chuckles and memories they shared.

Tom's creativity shone brightest when he was building birdhouses. These weren't just any birdhouses, mind you, but the Ritz-Carlton of avian abodes. Neighborhood birds were practically lining up to lease a spot. And when he wasn't constructing homes for his feathered friends, Tom could be found with his eyes glued to the silver screen, enjoying a movie, or savoring an ice-cold beer – which he often joked was the secret glue that held his birdhouses together.

Describing Tom is easy: he was the human embodiment of a friendly wink and a creative nudge. His kind-hearted jokes could defrost the coldest of days, and his friendly demeanor was as dependable as the sunrise. Tom never met a stranger, just friends he hadn't shared a laugh with yet.

Tom's final curtain call came peacefully, as he passed away in Prospect Heights, IL, due to natural causes. While the stage of life may have dimmed with his departure, the echoes of his laughter and the blueprint of his kindness remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him.

In a world often too serious for its own good, Tom was a reminder that a hearty laugh and a gentle soul could make even the steeliest of places feel like home. His legacy is built sturdier than the strongest steel beam and more welcoming than the coziest birdhouse.

So here's to Tom – a man who built more than just birdhouses; he built a life full of joy, creativity, and kindness. As we bid him a fond farewell, let's honor his memory by watching a good movie, enjoying an ice-cold beer, and, most importantly, sharing a laugh with someone – because that's exactly what Tom would have wanted. Cheers to you, Tom, and thank you for reminding us all to take life with a grain of humor and a pint of kindness.
