Obituary

Sylvia Virginia Tarchala, 71, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on October 3, 2025, at Evanston Hospital after a long illness.

Born on April 19, 1954, to Irene and Eric Doberstein Sr., Sylvia grew up in Chicago and graduated from Foreman High School before attending Luther College.

Throughout her life, Sylvia's warmth and kindness drew people to her. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome — whether as a bank teller, behind the bar, or in her most cherished role as an occupational therapist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Her compassion and dedication touched countless lives.

On December 31, 1988, Sylvia married the love of her life, Andrew Tarchala. Together they built a home filled with love and laughter, raising their two children, Marc Tarchala and April Tarchala, who were her greatest joy.

Sylvia was more than her accomplishments — she was a truly beautiful soul. Her gentle spirit, friendly smile, and caring heart left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

As one of her favorite songs reminded her, "Here comes the sun, and I say, it's all right." Sylvia's light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who loved her, a lasting reminder of the warmth she brought into the world.

She is survived by her devoted husband Andrew, her beloved children Marc and April, and many extended family members and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

The family will come together for a private celebration of Sylvia's life at a later time, surrounded by the warmth of those dearest to her. We welcome the gift of your memories and photographs, which may be shared at rememberingsvt@gmail.com, to help us weave together the story of a life so beautifully lived.
