Born on February 17, 1984, in Chicago, IL, Rachael's vibrant spirit and unwavering determination were evident from an early age. She left this world in the comfort of her wife's arms in Winfield, IL, surrounded by the love of her family and the cherished memories of a life well-lived.
Rachael's academic journey led her to the University of Dubuque, Iowa, where she graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences. Her passion for the environment was not merely academic; it was a calling that shaped her career and her contributions to the world. She worked tirelessly with Earth Corps and the Washington Conservation Corps, leaving an indelible mark on the planet she strove to protect. Her commitment to service was recognized when she received the presidential pin for her volunteer efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
Her professional path also crossed with her personal life when she joined the Naperville Park District, a fateful decision that introduced her to her beloved wife, Erin Kelly. Together, they shared a bond that was as deep as their shared love for the great outdoors.
Rachael's zest for life was infectious. She was an outdoor enthusiast who found joy in camping and backpacking in the mountains, rollerblading along nature paths, and hiking with her devoted dogs, Slash and Xena. Her love for adventure was matched only by her love for laughter. Rachael could often be found snuggling with Erin, watching silly movies, and playing video games, their laughter echoing through the halls of their home.
Her open heart extended beyond her family to include her father, Edward Broughton; her sister and brother-in-law, Heather and Josh Ingalls; her brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Hannah Anderson; and her niece, Jordan Edwards. Her wife's family, Bill, Lana, David and Gina Kelly accepted her with open arms and unconditional love. Rachael's aunts, uncles, cousins, and a network of friends across the country also felt the warmth of her kindness and the sincerity of her embrace. She accepted everyone for who they chose to be, embodying the essence of unconditional love.
Rachael's legacy is one of laughter, intelligence, and love. Her ability to find humor in the everyday, to approach problems with a sharp mind, and to offer love without hesitation made her a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew her. As author Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Rachael made everyone feel seen, heard, and valued, and for that, she will be dearly remembered and sorely missed.
