Michael Howard Hefner, affectionately known as Mike, was born on September 27, 1966, in Lakenheath U.S. Air Force Base hospital, England, and passed away suddenly on September 25, 2023, in Chicago, Illinois. He was a cherished son to Howard and Elizabeth Hefner, a beloved brother to Debra Hinton and Andrew Hefner, and a fond uncle to Bryan Paczynski, Rachel Keller, and great-uncle to Katheryn, Caroline, and Eleanor Smith.
Mike's academic journey was a testament to his intelligence and dedication. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in December 1993. He was recognized with a National Merit Scholarship and consistent inclusion on the Dean's List throughout his academic career. His curiosity extended beyond his major, with interests in geology and astronomy making him a well-rounded scholar.
His love for astronomy led him to serve as the supervising head technician at the Morehead Planetarium at UNC Chapel Hill during his college years. After graduation, Mike embarked on a successful career as a Software Engineer, where his sharp intellect and problem-solving skills were highly valued.
In his spare time, and in his later culinary career, Mike pursued his passion for cooking, honing his culinary skills at the Silver Fork culinary program in Chicago. He often experimented with new recipes and techniques he learned from his culinary training. His dishes were a hit among friends who looked forward to his culinary creations at gatherings. His love for cooking was just one of the many ways he expressed his creativity and passion for life.
Mike was known for his insatiable curiosity in many and varied subjects, with a notable encyclopedic knowledge and photographic memory. He had a unique ability to make complex subjects accessible and entertaining, and his love for sharing knowledge made him a captivating presence in any conversation.
Mike's sudden passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. His family and friends will remember him as a beacon of intelligence and humor, and his legacy will live on in the many lives he touched.
