Mary Eleanor
Durkin
Apr 10, 1948 — Apr 1, 2025
Mary Eleanor Durkin, D. Ed., age 76, of Evanston, Illinois, passed away peacefully in hospice at Evanston Hospital on April 1, 2025. Mary was the beloved daughter of Joseph and Eleanor Durkin and was preceded in death by her brother Rev. Charles Durkin and by her sister in law Paula Walowitz.
Mary was the adored mother of Todd Toby Wohlrabe (Adrienne Huddlestun) of Charleston, Illinois.
Mary was a cherished sister of Margaret "Monny" (Martin) Harper, Michael (Susan Kuchar), Patrick (Mary T Hoyt), Joan (John) Niemzyk, and Jean.
Mary was beloved "Aunt Monkey" to Mark, Matthew, Timothy, Michael, Rebecca, Megan, Luke, Anne, Jack, Julie, Jenny and Joelle. She was great aunt to many grand nieces and grand nephews.
Mary first worked as a newspaper reporter for Pioneer Press in the suburbs of Chicago. Following the footsteps of many family members, she became a teacher and taught journalism and writing at Baker University, University of Wisconsin (LaCrosse) and Eastern Illinois University. After retiring from teaching Mary worked as Communications Director for the University Professionals of Illinois, Local 4100, AFT, AFL-CIO. In retirement she volunteered at Deborah's Place, a shelter for homeless women.
Mary had a wickedly wry sense of humor ("That's spilled milk under the bridge ") and she was the historian and genealogist of the family. Mary was an outspoken advocate for a strong and independent press. Mary was an ardent supporter of women's and workers' rights. She was a great bridge partner and enjoyed many hours of bridge at Berger Park in Chicago and The Merion in Evanston. Above all, Mary cared deeply for her family.
Contributions can be made in Mary's memory to Deborah's Place and to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
