Mary Ellen Donovan, known affectionately as Mary to her friends and family, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 17, 2026, in New Lenox. Born on October 10, 1943, in Evergreen Park, Mary's life was characterized by her gentle spirit, friendly demeanor, and unfailing kindness.
Mary's early years were spent in the loving company of her late parents, Howard and Audrey Mueller. She was a cherished sister to her late brother, Howard Thomas, and is survived by her devoted sister, Eileen Dunne (Mueller). Mary's life was further blessed with the joy of her own family. She was a proud mother to Patrick Donovan and a nurturing mother-in-law to Michelle Donovan. Her role as a grandmother to Patrick, Noah, and Anna Donovan was one of her greatest joys, and she embraced every moment with them. Mary also held a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews, William, Corey, Colleen, Daniel, and Megan, loving them as her own.
A proud graduate of Mother McAuley Fine Arts High School, Mary's passion for learning and the arts stayed with her throughout her life. Her professional journey led her to a fulfilling career as an accountant at Argonne National Laboratories, where she retired after many years of dedicated service. Her colleagues remember her as a beacon of warmth and professionalism.
Mary's faith was an integral part of her life. As a devout Christian, she lived her beliefs through her actions, touching the lives of those around her with her grace and compassion. She found strength and solace in her faith, and it guided her through life's many seasons.
An avid lover of the outdoors, Mary found happiness in the simple pleasures of nature. She treasured her travels, seeking out the warmth of the sunshine and the beauty of new landscapes. These adventures brought her great joy and left her with a treasure trove of memories that she loved to share with her family and friends.
Those who knew Mary would describe her as the epitome of gentleness, a friend to all, and a kind soul who never hesitated to extend a helping hand. Her radiant smile and tender heart left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered. Mary's legacy is one of love, compassion, and generosity, and it will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Mary Ellen Donovan's life was a tapestry woven with the love of her family, the joy of her friendships, and the dedication to her faith and work. She will be deeply missed, yet her spirit will remain a guiding light for all who were touched by her presence. As we say our final goodbyes, we take solace in the knowledge that her gentle soul has found peace. Mary's journey on earth may have ended, but her story will be retold and cherished by generations to come.
Celebration of life to follow in June.
