Martin
O'Connor
Nov 3, 1969 — Aug 5, 2023
Martin O'Connor, passed away on August 5, 2023, in his hometown of Chicago, IL, leaving a legacy of love, laughter, and creativity. Born to Martin O'Connor Sr. (Mary Helen) and the late Eileen Phelan, Martin was a man who brought joy to all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Raised in the Beverly neighborhood, Martin's early education took place at Christ the King Elementary School and Quigley South High School. His love for art was evident from a young age, and he continued to nurture this passion throughout his life. Martin earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and further pursued his interest in art by obtaining a Master of Fine Arts from UW–Madison.
Martin was a dedicated husband to his wife, Kim Rooney, and a loving father to his sons, Martin Sean and Declan Thomas. He was also a cherished brother to Mary Eileen McKane and a doting uncle to Ronan McKane. His family will fondly remember him as a pillar of support, a source of endless amusement, and a wellspring of creativity.
In his professional life, Martin was a respected professor. He was a mentor and coach to many students of art, helping them to hone their skills and develop their unique artistic voices. In addition to teaching, he was a gifted artist with a particular passion for drawing. His artwork, much like his personality, was vibrant, full of life, and deeply emotive. Above all, Martin valued the company of his friends, who will remember him for his quick wit, his warm heart, and his infectious laugh.
Many gathered to remember Martin and share their fond memories at his Celebration of Life on Sunday, August 20. A Memorial Mass will be held at Christ the King Church, 9235 S. Hamilton Ave., Chicago, on Saturday, September 23 at 10 a.m.
