In Loving Memory of Martin Dale McDonald
October 16, 1953 – May 4, 2025
Every life tells a story, and Martin Dale McDonald's was one of quiet strength, loyalty, and simplicity. Born on October 16, 1953, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, to Amie Carroll and Major McDonald, Martin came into the world alongside his twin brother Marvin—a bond that would shape and steady him throughout his life.
Baptized in 1961 by Rev. O.W. Motley, Martin grew up with a sense of faith and discipline. He graduated from Bloom High School in 1971 and soon after joined the United States Army, proudly serving his country. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned home and began working for the Illinois Department of Corrections before discovering his lifelong trade as a structural iron worker—work that reflected his resilience, precision, and dedication.
Martin was a father to six children: Cory Fulwiley, Terrell Fulwiley, Sharelle Fulwiley-Johnson (Toby), William Kennedy (Brittney), Penney McDonald and Marcel McDonald. Though relationships were complicated and often unspoken, he carried a quiet hope to be closer to them. His legacy continues through 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Those who knew Martin knew a man who valued solitude, routine, and truth. He had a sharp, curious mind—rarely missing a news broadcast or a newspaper headline. He loved facts and fairness, and he loved sports with a passion few could match, from high school matchups to professional games—even bull riding had a place in his heart. Visitors to his home knew the routine: sign the calendar at the door and keep your stay under 15 minutes unless you had time for a game of chess.
Martin lived simply, kept few close, and trusted fewer. But his love for his twin brother Marvin, who preceded him in death along with their youngest brother Johnny Ray, was profound and enduring. We take comfort in knowing they are now reunited. Martin is survived by his children Cory, Terrell, Sharelle, William, Penney and Marcel; including his siblings Ella, Carolyn, Gail, Andrew, Sherman, and Bernita as well as his beloved Aunt Ora.
Martin's life may not have been filled with crowds or noise, but it was rich with consistency, authenticity, and quiet conviction. He was one of a kind—strong-willed, thoughtful, and unforgettable in his own way. He will be deeply missed by those who truly knew him and remembered for the story only he could have written.
To honor the man Martin was and to respect his final wishes, his family invites you to remember him in your own way-through a quiet moment, a favorite memory, or simply by watching the evening news and thinking of him.
