Obituary

Mark Wickart, 72, a gifted illustrator, renowned airbrush artist, dedicated craftsman, and deeply devoted leader and protector of his family, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on the morning of June 17, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of creative excellence, generosity, and quiet mastery that spanned decades.

Mark was born July 8, 1952 to Harry "Bud" and Erica Wickart in Chicago, Illinois. Mark's passion for the arts was evident from an early age. He earned a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago, where his natural talent was refined through formal training and mentorship. After graduating, he embarked on a successful career in the commercial art world, working as an illustrator at the Chicago-based firm Graziano, Kraft, and Zale for many years. His unique style was selected for work representing numerous household brands, including General Mills, Coors, Cheetos, Turtle Wax, and Kraft.

After leaving agency life, Mark found new freedom as a freelance airbrush artist. His technical precision and unique vision earned him respect across the industry. In the early 1980s, Mark joined the Air Force Art Program, donating his time and talent to document and depict the men and missions of the U.S. Air Force. He later served as President of the Midwest Region, supporting fellow artists and helping guide the program's mission. He was deeply moved that his inspiring works were chosen to be displayed at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

Following his retirement from commercial illustration, Mark found a new creative home as Head of Exhibits at the DuPage Children's Museum—a position he cherished. There, he poured his skills and heart into hands-on educational experiences for children, blending artistry and imagination in every exhibit. His innovations earned him two US Patents. It was at the museum that his love for woodworking blossomed. That passion later led him to a final chapter with Woodcrafters of Woodridge, where he continued sharing his skills and mentorship as a part-time wood artisan.

Whether through illustration, airbrushing, exhibit design, or finely crafted woodwork, Mark Wickart lived a life fueled by creativity and integrity. His impact touched not only the industries in which he worked but also the countless people who were lucky enough to know him.

Mark will be remembered for his quiet humility, his strong stubborn spirit, his lifelong pursuit of craft, and his unwavering love & devotion to his family. He leaves behind Karen, his loving wife of nearly 50 years; his daughter Melissa (Clark), grandchildren Landon and Nora; his son Kevin (Jacqueline), grandchildren Xavier and Oscar, and his brothers Terry (Mary) and Tim (Mary).

He will be deeply missed.
