Margaret Ann Marshall, lovingly known to everyone as Meg, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026, in Aurora, Illinois, just one week shy of her 73rd birthday. Born on September 26, 1953, in Chicago, Meg lived a life filled with love, laughter, family, service, and an unmistakable spirit that drew people to her.

Meg was married to the absolute love of her life, Jerry Marshall, from 1978 until his passing in 2011. Their love remained an important part of her life long after his passing, and her family takes comfort in imagining the two of them reunited and dancing together once again.

A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Meg served her country from 1971 to 1974. Her pride in being a Marine remained with her throughout her life, and she continued to honor that connection through her longtime membership in the American Legion.

Meg spent her professional life working in a variety of administrative and accounting positions, where her attention to detail and willingness to help others served her well. Away from work, she was an avid reader who enjoyed books of all kinds. She was also an exceptionally talented seamstress. Over the years, Meg made and altered countless dresses, suits, outfits, and even several wedding dresses for family and friends. Her talents were often another way for her to show how much she cared for the people around her.

Meg was known for being the life of the party. She loved people, cared deeply about others, and brought humor, energy, and personality wherever she went. She adored her large extended family and took great joy in being surrounded by those she loved.

Meg was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church, and her spirituality remained a key part her life.

She is survived by her son, Don Balis, and daughter-in-law, Debbie Balis; her beloved grandchildren, Reid and Mia Balis; and her six surviving siblings, Ted, Mike, Pat, Kathy, Bill, and Paul. She is also survived by dozens of nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Meg was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jerry Marshall, and her brother, Bob, who passed away in 2018. She is also preceded by her parents Chuck Payton and Frances Wilk.

To her family, Meg was much more than the accomplishments and experiences that filled her life. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, wife, friend, and proud Marine. To her son, she was simply the best Mom a son could ever ask for, and she will be missed more than words can express.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Meg’s honor. Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements have been finalized.
