Obituary

Margaret Pamela Laux, known to one and all as Margie or Marge, passed away on the 26th of October, 2023 in Chicago, Illinois, due to complications relating to long-term medical issues. Born in Okinawa, Japan on January 22, 1963, Margie was a constant source of creativity, gentleness and generosity, and was always ready to help out with any problem—be it an unruly child, a perplexing computer program, or a challenging art project.

Margie was the beloved daughter of the late France Laux and Josephine Laux, cherished sister to Ken (Chieko), Laura, Ed (Judi), Sandy, Linda, Wally (Irina), Ann (Paul), and Debbie, and a dear aunt to Justin, Danny, Michelle, Ella, Alexa, and Max. Her good humor and gentle spirit will be profoundly missed by her family and all who knew her.

Margie was a proud alumnus of Marquette University in Wisconsin, where she majored in computer programming while dabbling in the arts. Computer programming was then still relatively unevolved, and she had to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape. Her subsequent career in database management and related fields took her to many countries on nearly all continents, including extended stays in Switzerland, Japan, Scotland, and other countries and regions, where she delighted in making new friends and exchanging insights into different cultures.

Later in life, however, after the passing of her father France, Marge opted to be a companion to her widowed mother Josephine. As Margie adapted to life in a retirement community, she found ways to give expression to artistic inclinations that she had felt from an early age. Her computer expertise also proved to be highly useful in these settings, and she quickly made herself indispensable. Apart from exhibitions of her computer prowess and artistic flair, Margie also contributed to the community both in formal capacities, such as her service on the Movie Committee, and in various informal ways as well, such as by encouraging public display of artwork by other residents.

We will long remember Margaret Pamela Laux, our beloved Margie, for her creativity, kindness, child-like innocence, and devotion to others. "It's only the giving that makes you what you are." Margie gave a lot, to her parents, her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and to the many people she became friends with and helped in various ways; in her final years, this help was largely directed to the retirement communities where she resided with her mother. She will be deeply missed of course, but memories of her generosity and sweet benevolence will remain an inspiration to all of us.
