Lori Mae
Barrett-Netahlo
Jun 17, 1959 — Jan 8, 2024
It is with a profound sense of loss and affection that we honor the life and legacy of Lori Mae Barrett-Netahlo, who passed away at the age of 64 on January 8th, 2024, due to complications following surgery. Born on June 17th, 1959, in Oak Park, IL, Lori's life was a testament to her unwavering spirit of generosity and love for learning.
Lori was the cherished daughter of the late Roy and Myrna Netahlo and the beloved stepdaughter of Eileen Netahlo. She found her life partner in Don Barrett, with whom she shared a deep and enduring love while residing in Des Plaines, IL. Lori embraced her role as a stepmother with grace and affection, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of her stepchildren, Samantha and Matthew Barrett.
An alumnus of Roosevelt University, Lori's pursuit of an MBA was a reflection of her commitment to education and personal growth. Her intelligence and passion for knowledge were evident in her career as an educator. Lori dedicated many years to teaching elementary school students in District 65, later expanding her influence by teaching continuing education in District 214 and for the Maine Township. Her brief tenure with the Des Plaines Historical Society allowed her to share her love of history through lectures, further cementing her reputation as a friendly and kind-hearted educator.
Lori's interests were as varied as they were deep. Her love of classical music resonated with her soulful nature and provided a backdrop to her thoughtful moments. She had a love for wildlife, which reflected her kind spirit; as she nurtured and cared for the creatures that shared her environment. Lori's passion for reading was insatiable, with a particular affinity for ancient history and crime novels, both fiction and nonfiction. Her intelligence shone through in the thoughtful discussions and insights she offered on her favorite subjects.
Lori's presence was a light that enriched the lives of her family, friends, and students. Her ability to connect with people, to share her knowledge and her warmth, made her an unforgettable figure in the hearts of those she touched.
While Lori's passing leaves a void, her legacy is one of compassion, education, and an unrelenting curiosity about the world around her. Lori's memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as her teachings and her spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Lori Mae Barrett-Netahlo will be deeply missed, but her impact on the world will resonate for generations to come.
