Larry
Porter
Jul 15, 1956 — Dec 1, 2023
Larry "Lye" Porter, a man known for his loving nature, interesting character, and spirited heart, passed away on December 1, 2023, at the age of 67 in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Born to Jesse and Bertha Porter on July 15, 1956, Larry was the second eldest of six children and grew up surrounded by a large, close-knit family. Throughout his life, Larry's infectious smile and generous spirit touched the hearts of many.
A proud graduate of Harrison High School in 1974, Larry's commitment to hard work was evident early on. He dedicated many years to his profession as a truck driver, a role that allowed him to explore and connect with people from all walks of life. Larry's colleagues remember him as a man who could lighten up any room with his stories and laughter.
Family was the cornerstone of Larry's world. He was a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Survived by his loving mother, Bertha Porter, his daughters Chequilla Renee (William) McKinney-Pittman and Matisha Porter, his grandson Marcus Jr. (Antinique), granddaughters Shontierra Porter and MaKayla Monroe, as well as his great-grandsons Tristan, Kaiden, and Kaleb Porter, and great-granddaughters Kinnedi and Kinslei Porter, Larry's spirit will continue to live on through them.
Larry's life was also enriched by his siblings, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond. He is survived by his sister Cynthia (Jesse), and brothers Eric (Lillie) and Bernard (Vickie), along with his nieces Shana, Jasmine, and Jessica, and nephews Andrew Jr., Joshua, Eric Jr. , Bernard Jr., Jacob, and Emmanuel. A host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends also feel the loss of a man who was more than just a relative or acquaintance – he was a beacon of joy in their lives.
Preceding him in death were his beloved son Marcus Sr., his father Jesse Porter, his brother Jeffrey Porter, and his sister Stephanie "Rena" McDaniel. They are among the cloud of heavenly witnesses who welcomed Larry back into their loving embrace.
Larry's life was a testament to the power of positivity and resilience. He faced his battle with pancreatic cancer with the same courage and strength that characterized his entire life. Those who knew Larry will remember him for the way he made life a little brighter for everyone around him.
As we reflect on Larry's life, a quote from Maya Angelou resonates with the legacy he leaves behind: "Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud." Larry indeed was that rainbow in the lives of many, bringing color and hope even on the cloudiest of days.
The memories of Larry's loving nature, his interesting and spirited anecdotes, and the immeasurable impact he had on his family and friends will be cherished forever. His absence leaves a void that can never be filled, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Larry Porter's life will be celebrated in a private ceremony, surrounded by those who loved him most. His story, marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering zest for life, will be recounted for generations to come. Larry's journey on earth has concluded, but his influence remains a guiding light for all who carry his memory in their hearts.
