Obituary

Kathleen Jean Leaf, affectionately known as Kathy to her friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024, at the age of 70 in Chicago, Illinois. Born on November 11, 1953, in Elgin, Illinois, to Frederick and Marie Ertmann,  Kathy's warmth and spirit were a gift to all who knew her. She departed this life, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness. Kathy truly found the pleasure of simple things. An avid reader, she found solace and adventure within the pages of countless books, which were her constant companions throughout her life. Her love for crochet allowed her to create beautiful pieces that she generously shared with family and friends, weaving threads of her love into every stitch as well as winning her ribbons at the county fair.

Kathy's appreciation for the outdoors was evident in her smile whenever she spent time in nature, whether it was tending to her garden or simply enjoying the serenity of sitting on the porch on a sunny day. Kathy's favorite past time was spending time with her grandchildren. Those who had the privilege of knowing Kathy will remember her for her loving nature, her sense of humor, and her kind heart that knew no bounds. She had the rare ability to find humor in the everyday and could effortlessly bring a smile to anyone's face. Her kindness was a beacon that drew people to her, and it remains a comforting memory that will continue to inspire those she has left behind.

Kathy's memory will be cherished and kept alive by her beloved daughter, Karyn (Bryan) Shatzer of Wonder Lake, Illinois. Her spirit will live on through her grandchildren, Kayden Shatzer of Winona, Minnesota, Lylah Shatzer of Wonder Lake, IL and Anthony and Hannah Leaf of Cary, IL. Kathy's lifelong childhood friends, Kary, Sue, and Deb, will hold dear the countless memories and unbreakable bonds forged over many years of friendship. Kathy was preceeded in death by her son, Martin Leaf Jr., husband, Martin Leaf Sr , as well as her parents. As we bid farewell to Kathy, we celebrate a life that was a testament to the power of love and friendship. Her presence was a gift, and though she has left this earthly realm, her spirit will continue to surround us. Kathy's life was a beautiful tapestry of moments shared with those she held dear, and her story will be recounted with fondness and joy by all who were touched by her grace.

Kathy's family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who have been part of her journey. The love and support shown during this time have been a source of great comfort.
