Katherine Michelle
Sauerbier
Apr 24, 1985 — May 11, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Katherine Michelle (Katie) Sauerbier. She died in Chicago on May 11, 2026, surrounded by family and friends.
Katie, known to many as Kez Ban, was born April 24, 1985 in Durham, North Carolina. She was an enthusiastic, animated, energetic, passionate, and generous person. From the very beginning, it was obvious she was an old soul. Katie loved nature and would not harm a living creature, not even an ant. She loved gardening with her dad and crafting with her mom. She was also extremely artistic. In high school, one of her art pieces was sent overseas and featured in Japan. Throughout her life, she continued to draw and paint many deep, beautiful pieces. She was an articulate speaker and an incredible writer, often writing stories and sending letters to family and friends. Katie was friendly, social, and inquisitive. She never met a stranger, talking to everyone she encountered, often sharing a kind word or compliment. She gave each person she met, whether a homeless person or a doctor, her full, undivided attention. She made people feel as though they were seen and they truly mattered. If someone was in need, even a stranger, she was the first to step in to offer assistance. Katie had a passion for exploring that took her all over the country, from coast to coast. She immersed herself in traveling, creating wonderful life experiences. She was extremely intelligent and loved to debate. Anyone who faced her in a debate was generally on the losing end. At a very young age, she discovered her love of music. Her mom bought her a guitar just before high school, and her youth director taught her a couple of chords. The guitar became an extension of Katie's soul. She always had a guitar with her, constantly singing and writing music. This love of music led her to audition for American Idol, where she made it through several elimination rounds and to Hollywood. For years after, she would walk down the streets of Chicago or play her guitar and have people come up to her to ask if she was Kez Ban from American Idol. She was so gracious and kind to everyone who recognized her. In addition to all the other talents mentioned, she was also a fire performer and balloon artist. She loved entertaining and bringing people joy. She had a contagious personality that simply captivated people. Our hearts are broken. Katie will be missed by so many people.
We want to thank Advocate Christ Medical Center in Chicago for the truly amazing medical care she received. The expertise, compassion, care, and support the nurses, doctors, and chaplains showed Katie and her family and friends while she was in the cardiac ICU was unparalleled. They are truly Advocates of Christ.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
Katie is survived by her parents, John and Evelyn Sauerbier, sister Kimberly Dick (Tim), nephew Devin Dick, niece Ryan Dick, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
