Joseph Alvin Sangster, Jr. aka "Daddy Joe" passed away on December 16, 2023 at the age of 86 of bone cancer.
He was born on September 27, 1937 to parents Joseph, Sr. and Evelyn Sangster in Memphis, Tennessee. He had one sibling, a sister, Gertrude "Gertie" Sangster. All three preceded him in death.
Joseph and his family moved to the southside of Chicago in the 1940's. He became a Boy Scout during a time when race segregation within the Boy Scouts Association was normal. He joined the Douglas Division, the only division for blacks at that time.
Joseph went to Moseley Elementary School and graduated from the 8th grade in 1953. He received a high school equivalency certificate in 1969. He also received a GED in 2001 as well. He received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Chicago State University in 1986.
Joseph graduated Shodan from the Chicago Karate Center in 1969 thus making him a black belt in Judo after receiving his diploma.
Joseph was one of the original members of the National Guard Company G 178th Infantry Regimental Combat Team which was a segregated unit for "colored people". He served until 1956 receiving an honorary discharge. Several years later, Joseph became a private first class having joined the United States Army. This began his tour in the Korean War from 1958 to 1960.
Joseph loved jogging which he did daily well into his 70's. In his 80's, he visited a gym every day. The months before his death he worked out at home.
Joseph worked numerous small jobs before settling for General Electric retiring early at the age of 62 ½.
He leaves behind a daughter, Kimla Sangster Jackson, grandchildren Aaris Jackson, Kimyce Jackson and Cyle Jackson and great grandsons Taveon Jackson and Tai Lloyd Ware.
He also leaves behind sons Joseph Rice, Curtis Rice, Donnell Sangster, Lovell Sangster, Marcus Johnson and son-in-law James Brown.
