Obituary

Joseph Stanley Cannon, known affectionately as "Joe" to all who knew him, passed away peacefully in his home in Chicago, IL, on July 12, 2023. Born on July 18, 1972, in Chardon, Ohio, Joe lived a life full of love, optimistic joy, and devotion to his family, friends, and community.

Joe was a man of many talents and interests, but above all else, he was a man of service. He was selfless and generous, always putting the needs of others before his own. He was a thoughtful friend who was quick to provide supportive advice and a warm laugh. Joe's friendly nature was infectious and he had a knack for making people feel special and valued.

Joe was a proud graduate of Brigham Young University, where he studied economics. He later received his JD from the University of Chicago, showcasing his commitment to his education. Joe brought his passion for learning and hard work to his professional life, working alongside his mother and brothers in the family business, Cannon Structures. His work ethic was admirable, and he was respected for his integrity and dedication.

Family was the cornerstone of Joe's life. He is survived by his beloved wife, America Cannon, their children Ali (Dallin) Cannon Stevens, Carolina "Dita" (Aaron Miner) Cannon, Stanley Cannon, Maria Elena "Lenny" Cannon, and Josh Cannon. He was a proud grandfather to William Cannon Stevens, whom he adored. Joe's love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life. He was a dedicated father and husband who was always present and supportive.

Joe had a passion for baseball and the Chicago White Sox. He also had a love for reading; his favorite book, read first by him at age 12, was The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. But what Joe enjoyed most was spending time with his family and friends. Whether it was a family reunion in Stanley, Idaho, serving alongside members of his congregation, a party with America's Mexican food and friends, or just a Settlers of Catan game night at home, Joe cherished these moments and the people he shared them with. In all these situations, Joe was at his happiest, animatedly talking at the center of a circle of friends or family.

After Joe was diagnosed with lung cancer, he leaned into his oft-repeated phrase "it is what it is." And despite knowing that his cancer was terminal, he strived to make the most of his remaining time. He outlived the doctors' estimates of his life expectancy threefold due to his strength, resilience, and sheer stubbornness. In his final days, Joe was devastated to leave his family behind, but he took comfort in being surrounded by his wife and children and their reminders and promises that all would be okay until they meet again.

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Joe, but we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to live on through his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched.
