Obituary

Jonathan Thomas Cartwright, known fondly as Jon to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2024, on his 33rd birthday, in Chicago. His departure came as a result of complications from his lifelong battle with Muscular Dystrophy, a condition he faced with an unwavering spirit of courage and adventure.

Jon is the son of Cheryl Hardt and Roland Hardt. His infectious laughter and sense of humor brought joy to all who knew him. Jon grew up surrounded by a loving family, including his sisters, Emily Foley and Susan Foley (Chvalovsky), his brothers, Christopher Cartwright, Rick Kaspar, and Nick Davis, and his devoted service dog, Solar, who was a constant companion in his journey since June of 2018. He was also cherished by his grandmother, Mary Ann Cartwright, fondly known as Nana, and remembered his late grandfather, Thomas Cartwright, or Papa, with deep affection. Aunts Loriann Cartwright and Anna Marie Wallace, along with his aunt and uncle John and Joan Cartwright, and cousins Felicia Guajardo, Desiree Watson, Dana Diaz, Tommy Cartwright, Jason Cairo, and Chase Cairo, all held special places in his heart. His dear friend Hector Hernandez stood by him, sharing in both struggles and triumphs.

Jon's academic journey at East Leyden High School in Franklin Park, Illinois, was marked by his determination and resilience. Despite the challenges posed by his condition, he embraced life with an adventurous spirit that would often get him called to the dean's office.

His involvement in the Association of Horizon Camps mirrored his belief in the power of community and the importance of support systems for individuals with disabilities. Jon was always committed to making the world a more inclusive and compassionate place for all. Jon's legacy also lives on through his final act of kindness as an organ donor to three individuals, a decision that encapsulates his generous nature and desire to help others even after his passing.

Jon's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. An enthusiastic fan of professional wrestling, he found joy and excitement in the sport's drama and athleticism. His love for service animals reflected his understanding of the profound bond between humans and their companions, and his own relationship with Solar was a beautiful example of this connection.

His journey on this earth may have concluded, but the memories he created and the lives he touched will forever resonate with a profound and joyful echo.
