Obituary

Hernando Rebellon, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, godfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2024, at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Born on May 9, 1947, in La Victoria, Colombia. Hernando's life was a testament to joy, humor, and generosity. He was a beacon of optimism, always carrying with him a spirit that was as infectious as it was comforting.

Hernando's laughter was a staple in the lives of those who knew him. His wit and humor brought light to every gathering, and his favorite quote, "jodido pero contento," which translates to "screwed but happy," perfectly encapsulated his unfailing ability to find the silver lining in every cloud. He lived by these words, demonstrating that happiness is not a result of circumstances but a state of mind.

His love for his wife, Amparo, was a profound and enduring tale of companionship. Together, they navigated life's ups and downs with grace and unwavering support for one another. Hernando was a loving father to Victoria (Ray) Lopez and Nathalia Rebellon, and a joyful father figure to his godchild, Ricardo Rodriguez, who he loved as a son. His guidance and humor will be deeply missed by his daughters and godson.

The role of "Tata" brought Hernando immense pride and joy. His granddaughters, Marisabel (Michael) Rebellon, Erica (James) and Jenel Lopez, and great-granddaughters, Mia and Maggie Rebellon, were the apple of his eye. He cherished every moment spent with them, imparting wisdom and laughter in equal measure.

Hernando is survived by his sister, Ligia Rebellon, who, along with his nieces and nephews, will hold dear the memory of his generous spirit. He joins in peace with his late parents, Eloy and Elsa Rebellon, and his sister, Flor Rojas, who predeceased him.A lover of life's simple pleasures, Hernando found solace in the beauty of his garden before illness took that joy away. His hands, once busy nurturing the earth, were always ready to offer help or a warm embrace to those around him. His passion for the history channel, Colombian soap operas, and soccer games, particularly when America de Cali or the Colombian national team played, was a source of great entertainment and pride. Colombian music and singers from his youth filled his home with melodies and memories.

In the words of Gabriel García Márquez, a fellow Colombian who captured the heart of the nation, "No medicine cures what happiness cannot." Hernando lived by this philosophy, sharing his joy and laughter as the ultimate remedy for life's challenges. His legacy will be carried forward by the love and light he shared with everyone he met.

The family of Hernando Rebellon wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the medical staff at Rush University Medical Center for their compassionate care during his final days.

Hernando's life will be celebrated in a manner that honors the happiness he spread so freely. His stories, his jokes, and his unrelenting positivity have left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. As we bid farewell to a man who was truly funny, optimistic, and generous, we take solace in knowing that his laughter and love will echo through generations.

Rest in peace, Hernando Rebellon, and may your spirit continue to inspire joy and contentment in all of us.
