Herminia Villacrusis was a much-loved and well-respected sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Born in the Philippines in March of 1938, she was the 5th out of seven siblings including Marcelina, Lilia (Acena), Augusto, Alfredo, Eduardo and Violeta (Esteban). Although Herminia's mother, Hermogena Rufo Villacrusis, passed away when Herminia was very small, she was lovingly raised by her siblings, maternal grandmother, Isabela Rufo, and her father, Vicente Villacrusis. Herminia obtained a B.A in nursing from Far Eastern University in Manila, Philippines, including time as an exchange student in Michigan. Thereafter, she moved to Canada by herself at 23 years of age and went on to have a successful career in Canada and the U.S. as a cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery nurse, including a long period at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. In addition to a successful career, Herminia was an intrepid traveler - riding camels in northern Africa, driving all over Europe with friends, and residing for a short while in Switzerland while her best friend, Dr. Rudy Mendoza, took fine cooking classes at Le Cordon Bleu. She did all this travel as she did everything in life - as stylishly as possible! If one could depend on anything, it would be Herminia being elegantly dressed, perfectly made up and smelling fantastically of O de Lancome, whether it be to attend a Broadway show in New York, a holiday party or for a simple meal with family. Herminia was a generous and kind soul as well. This generosity - to family, to her patients - was, perhaps, her most defining trait. She helped many a family member through college and never hesitated to provide support - financial and moral - to those who needed it. Herminia always had a kind smile and encouraging words for everyone. Although she did not have any of her own children, "Tita Minia" or "Tita Hermie" was loved and will be remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins. She had a positive impact on many lives. Herminia is survived her sister, Lilia Villacrusis Acena. Herminia will be interred at the Villacrusis mausoleum in Nasugbu, Batangas, Philippines. May she rest in peace.
