Obituary

Frederick Heilizer, 91, of Chicago, Illinois, father of eight and grandfather of fifteen, passed away on April 16, 2022. Growing up as a tough kid in the Bronx, Fred was a good athlete and played baseball at a high level. As a Chicagoan he adopted the Cubs as his team but secretly favored the Giants, going back to the old New York Polo Grounds and the "Say Hey Kid" Willie Mays. A popular and long tenured professor of psychology, Fred was a highly regarded researcher and taught generations of students at DePaul University. He loved his work and continued with classes well into his eighties. In 1993 Fred married Lucy Redmon, whose irrepressible joie de vivre and love of the theater opened happy new worlds for Fred, and the two were inseparable until her passing in 2012. He was an avid motorcyclist, crisscrossing the country numerous times on his Honda Gold Wing, played tennis with a passion, and found a true sense of community with his wonderful friends at the Lakeshore Ski and Sports Club. Fred is survived by his first wife Judith, their children Ruth (Ira), Jeffrey, Glenn (Deb), Rachel, Timothy (Jodi) and Miriam, and his sister Ruth Grossman. He was preceded in death by his wife Lucy, his children Deborah and Anthony, and his sister Leatrice Lifshitz. Fred will be dearly missed by his family and his many friends. A memorial gathering is being planned for June 4, 2022. For details contact Glenn Heilizer at 312-759-9000 or glenn@heilizer.com.
