Frank Coyne
Kelly
Jun 1, 1954 — Dec 31, 2024
Chicago, IL - Dr. Frank Coyne Kelly of Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2024, after a valiant battle with Parkinsonism. The son of Daniel Grady Kelly and Helene Coyne Kelly, Frank was the youngest of three boys. He was born on June 1, 1954, in Evanston, Illinois, attended elementary school at St. Joan of Arc, and graduated from Niles North High School in 1972.
Frank earned his BS (1976) in Biochemistry and MS (1978) in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He obtained his medical degree from Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University - Medicine and Sciences in 1982. He completed his internal medicine residency in 1984 at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center. Frank spent more than 40 years as an Internist in private practice in Chicago, most recently as partner of West Loop University Medicine, and practiced at Rush University Hospital. He also served as an Instructor in the Department of Internal Medicine. He retired in August 2023.
Frank loved the practice of medicine and especially "taking care" of his patients (his favorite term to describe the relationship); he was especially proud that multiple generations of families had chosen him to provide care. His caring extended to writing thank you letters for numerous thoughtful gifts he received throughout the year; whether it was a small remembrance or an extravagant gift, everyone received a handwritten thank you note.
Frank was a sports enthusiast and nature lover. He began to play golf with his father and brothers as a teenager at Bob O'Link Golf Club in Highland Park, where he remained a member for 45 years. He loved hockey and played with the Winnetka OTH Hockey Club for over 35 years. He was an avid cyclist and enjoyed fly fishing, hiking, rock climbing, and ice climbing. For more than 25 years, Frank spent two weeks each summer at Red Fish Lake, Idaho, in the Saw Tooth Range of the Rocky Mountains. He camped, hiked, and climbed many of the tallest peaks in the range; his proudest climb was the Elephant's Perch.
Frank is survived by his loving wife, Mary Beth Watson-Manheim, a Professor and Department Head in the College of Business at the University of Illinois Chicago. They were married on January 13, 2012, and enjoyed traveling, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with family.
He is also survived by his son, John Anthony Kelly, his stepson Wayne "Cooper" Fritz Jr. (Katie), step-granddaughter Leigh Sage Fritz, his two brothers, Daniel "Dan" Grady Kelly Jr. (Annette Wheeler) and Peter Coyne Kelly (Jane). Additionally, Frank is survived by two half-brothers, Sean Kelly and Terry Kelly, and much-beloved family, including an uncle, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He is additionally survived by Noreen Cashman, the mother of his son John. Frank was predeceased by his parents and a half-brother, Timothy Kelly.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in Chicago at a later date.
