Obituary

Erin Shumway, from Chicago, died peacefully at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on Aug. 4, 2023 following a long illness. She was surrounded by Adele Weiss, her treasured and beloved daughter, as well as her closest friend. She was 54.

A devoted mother to those with both two legs and four, Erin was an avid reader, terrible cook, and lover of Reddit rabbit holes. She enjoyed travelling and could be equally amused driving a rented RV across the U.S. or sipping beverages on the café terraces of Barcelona. She walked to raise money for breast cancer research, was quick with a punchline, slow to a half-marathon finish line, and reveled in any opportunity for cut-throat bidding at elementary school fundraising auctions. She laughed easily and often — making many around her do the same. She adored a good spreadsheet.

Born in Indianapolis in 1969, Erin's family moved to the Chicago suburbs and she graduated from Lake Forest High School before shedding dreary winters for the sunshine of the West Coast. She graduated from Pepperdine University in California in 1991 with a bachelor's in business administration. Soon after, Erin succumbed to the siren call of Midwestern sensibility and Lou Malnati's pizza, returning to Illinois where she married her now-former husband Eric Babat.

In Chicago, she was among the very first employees at Archipelago, an ECN that became the first fully electronic stock exchange and was later acquired by the New York Stock Exchange. She spent 24 years working at Arca/NYSE, building lifelong friendships and meeting her former partner David Weiss. David and Erin created an exceptional child together, Adele "Poppet" Weiss, born in 2003.

Erin is survived by her daughter Adele, who was her pride and joy and whom she loved above all else. Other survivors include her mother Alicia Meling, sisters Cara and Jenna Meling, stepmother Bonnie Shumway, sister Kristen Gough (née Shumway), Timmiee The Dog, and a loving community of friends and colleagues in Chicago, New York, and San Francisco.

She was preceded in death by her father Thomas Shumway, stepfather Gordon Meling, and her dog Murphy.
