Obituary

Ed Kress

Anyone who spent time around Degerberg Academy likely has a story about Ed Kress. A 9th-degree black belt, Ed was passionate about sharing his love for martial arts, particularly boxing, grappling, and striking, and was a member and instructor there for 40 years. He taught with humor, patience, and a discipline that endeared him to countless students. "Coach Kress" died on June 10 in Evanston, Illinois.

Athletics came to him naturally. A hall of fame wrestler and football player at both Mendel High School and North Park University, he captained Mendel's city championship wrestling team, helped North Park capture a wrestling conference title, and later coached wrestling at Loyola Academy.

The same traits that made him so successful athletically—dedication, self-motivation, resilience, leadership — served him well in a business career that spanned sales, executive recruiting, public speaking, and self-defense instruction. He had an uncanny ability to connect with people. To make them feel seen. And to listen with empathy and kindness.

But for all of the awards and accomplishments, it was the role of husband to Denise for 46 years, father to Jeremy and Chelsea, and grandfather to Molly that brought the most pride. He adored his family. Ed loved music, live performances, and travel, especially his annual trips to Hawaii. He enjoyed the peace of long walks along Evanston's lakeshore. Still, he thrived most in the company of others, where he could spin tales of growing up on the south side of Chicago and the fascinating people he encountered during his 72 years—stories mostly told over good food and a beer or margarita.

Because he never missed a chance to tell a story or share a laugh, the family would treasure receiving memories, stories, and photos from those who knew him at EdKressMemories@gmail.com.

To honor his wishes, funeral services will be private.
