Obituary

Eduardo Herbert Sornito, March 1937 - May 2022. Tennis. Exercise. Eating healthy. The secret knowledge of the "one-inch punch". Anyone who has been in a room with Eduardo Sornito, would inevitably hear about one or all those topics. People close to "Eddie" or "Putchoy" knew him as an intense personality, dedicated to a unique set of routines. Eduardo was born in Santa Barbara, Iloilo, Philippines, the eldest son of Engineer Juan Evangelista Sornito and Ida Herbert Sornito. He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Manila. With his young family, he emigrated to Chicago in 1972. In 1981, he became a registered professional engineer with the Illinois Society for Professional Engineers. For much of his life and career, he was at his drafting table, combining mathematical precision with his creative imagination. Most of the time, he could be found on the tennis court, challenging people half his age to matches. Up through his mid 80's, he could do 10 pullups, had quick reflexes on the punching bag, and loved to demonstrate his signature martial arts moves. Every morning, he developed wild oatmeal concoctions that could include turmeric or dilis (dried fish) and challenged the taste buds. But he affirmed it was the answer to a long and healthy life. Eddie Sornito will always be remembered as an original. Eduardo Herbert Sornito is survived by his wife of 54 years, Adriana Verano Sornito, who he referred to as his "angel"; his two daughters, Mary Ann Verano Sornito and Christina Verano Carter (née Sornito), both of whom inherited his drive to push limits; his youngest sister, Lydia Sornito Peñacerrada, who followed her brother's footsteps to become an engineer; and his only grandchild, Adrian Laurel Sornito-Carter. As we celebrate his life, we reflect on what he was at heart, an intense soul who valued the simple things in life.
