Donna Jean Hamill, a long-time resident of the Lakeview neighborhood, died July 4, 2019. She was 68 years old. Born in Chicago, IL, she was raised in South Holland, IL. A graduate of Elizabeth Seton High School, Donna received her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. She had careers in social work, then banking, then many years in the office of Graceland Cemetery, Chicago, IL. From early childhood, she was an avid reader of non-fiction and fiction, favoring novels by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Stephen King, and J. K. Rowling. She adored "The Gilmore Girls" on TV. Her team was the Cubs. She loved good food, trips to nearby Mariano's, family gatherings, the occasional cigarette; and she always had a nice supply of candy and snacks for her visitors. Most of Donna's adult life, she coped with epilepsy and neurofibromatosis; with more than her fair share of doctor and hospital visits. She met every health challenge with courage and grace. She is survived by her mother, Eleanore, sisters Maureen and Nancy, brothers Scott and Brian and her favorite nieces and nephews: Heather, Grant, Mason, Gina, Marisa, Ryan, Sydney, and Conrad; and her loving in-laws Joseph, Vince, Linda, and Ellen. A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, August 10 from 2 pm to 5 pm at Avenue Tavern, 2916 N. Broadway, Chicago, IL 60657. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Epilepsy Foundation or the Heartland Alliance.
