It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Don "Animal" McMillan, a world class sailboat racer and a true sailing legend. Don left us on May 4, 2025, leaving behind cherished memories that will always be etched in our hearts.

Born with an unyielding spirit and a profound love for the sea, Don's passion for sailing was evident from a young age when he learned to sail from his father on Lake Michigan. After retiring from US Steel Corporation, he dedicated his life to ocean racing competing on numerous race boats including: Sidewinder, Abracadabra, Merrythought, Boomerang just to name a few. His tenacity and skill propelled him to participate in many prestigious races around the globe including: The Admirals Cup, Sidney Hobart Race, The Transpac Race, Fastnet Race, and The Mackinaw as well as the Port Heron Mack. He truly had an awe for the sea. On one particular leg (the Ocean Triangle) of the SORC, spinnaker up on a broad reach, hull speed, full moon with dolphins off the stern, he looked over at his brother Chris and said, "this is my Church".

Don's presence on the water was matched only by his commitment to lifelong friendship. He formed lasting bonds with many fellow sailors. While a bit rough around the edges at times he was always ready to share his extensive knowledge and guide others in the sailing community. His zest for life brightened every boat, every race and every gathering.

Above all Don's adventurous spirit and commitment to excellence inspired all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may no longer race the waves, his legacy will endure in the hearts and minds of those who loved him. We will remember Don not only for his achievements but for his spirit and the unforgettable moments we all have shared with him.

He is survived by his brothers Richard, Scott, Chris, his long-time friend Marcia Medema and many other friends who will carry forward his love for sailing and the ocean. The family requests that contributions be made to the US Sailing Foundation supporting causes that were dear to Don's heart. Don "Animal" McMillan may have sailed his final race, but his spirit will navigate the seas of our memories. Eight bells, rest in peace Animal.
