Jul 12, 1945 — Feb 25, 2025
Donald A. Gardner Jr., known affectionately as Don, passed away on February 25, 2025, at the age of 79 in Lake Forest, IL. Born on July 12, 1945, in Elmira, NY, Don's journey was one marked by dedication, innovation, and the warmest of hearts.
Don's academic prowess led him to pursue higher education at Buffalo University, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace and a Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1969. His passion for engineering paved the way for a remarkable career that spanned over four decades. As a nuclear engineer, Don achieved Chief Engineer at United Engineers & Constructors. His exceptional skills and leadership earned him the prestigious "President's Award" from Washington Group International in 2005, recognizing his outstanding performance and project management.
One of Don's most notable professional contributions was his role in the containment of the Chernobyl disaster. Representing the United States Government, he was part of the first group to re-enter the site after the 16-year incubation period, marking a significant moment in international nuclear safety. Additionally, his commitment to environmental protection was evident through his work with Norway and Russia to remove Russian radioactive waste from the Arctic environment in 1996 and his role as the Project Manager for the Seversk project in 2005.
Beyond his professional achievements, Don cherished the time spent with his sons at baseball and hockey games, sharing with them the thrills of sport and the value of teamwork. Don's love for automobiles was also a significant part of his life, particularly the hours dedicated to working on his Buick Skylark with his son Darren, moments that both father and son treasured deeply.
Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Ann Parrish. He is survived by a loving family that includes his children and their spouses: Amanda, Damian, Lisa, Darren, Monika, & Shaun. Don's legacy continues through his grandchildren: Samantha, Zaquery, Symphony, Kaylee, Luke, and Julia, and his great-grandchild, Ashleigh, who all brought immense joy and pride to his life.
Don Gardner Jr. was a man of integrity and generosity, whose life's work significantly impacted the world of nuclear engineering and environmental safety. His unwavering commitment to his family, his inexhaustible work ethic, and his ability to face challenges with resilience and optimism will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we bid farewell to Don, we celebrate a life well-lived, a mind that never ceased to innovate for the betterment of humankind, and a heart that never ran out of love for his family. His spirit will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps, both in the field of engineering and in the simple acts of kindness that make the world a better place.
