Obituary

David Frank Lombardo was born on September 14, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois to Louis Frank Lombardo and Joanne Munsey Lombardo. He died at 61 years of age in Beach Park, Illinois on March 29, 2025, from natural causes.

David's life was full of adventure and big ideas, although he faced many challenges as well. He lost his father at the age of 5 and moved around a lot as his family navigated their way through life after his passing. He was a fiercely loyal son to his mother, bringing her to live with him in several places and dedicating himself to her wellbeing for much of her later years. David was keenly curious about science and how things work and spent endless hours talking with his brothers about the latest scientific or engineering marvel that intrigued him. He was physically active throughout his life, and even ran the Chicago marathon in his late 40's. He was always the center of conversation at any gathering. You just had to follow the loudest laughter in the room to find him.

David graduated from Round Lake High in 1981 and then worked for a tree service company while attending Oakton Community College. He was later hired at Underwriter's Laboratories as a lab assistant while attending the Illinois Institute of Technology part time. He earned his BS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1993 and joined Underwriter's Laboratories in Northbrook, Illinois as a Product Safety Engineer. His work with UL took him to Alaska for many years, where he was responsible for electrical safety testing across the state, including along the Alaska pipeline. He also worked for UL in Portland, Oregon and London, England. He had a long career at UL, working there for 33 years, before he retired in 2019. True to his nature, in the last few years since he retired, David was living the van life and traveling all over the country, visiting family and friends along the way.

David is survived by three siblings–Francine Lombardo in Indiana, Chuck Lombardo in Illinois, and Michael Lombardo in California; 3 nephews–Jason Loan in Alaska, Ken Lombardo in Illinois, and Matthew Lombardo in California; 2 nieces–Lindsay Lombardo in Illinois and Kaitlyn Lombardo in California; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout California, Colorado, Kentucky, Ohio, Utah, and Washington D.C.

A Celebration of Life service will be held later this summer.
