Obituary

Darlene Kay Ballantine (nee Dunbar), a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on July 27, 2025, in her hometown of Joliet, IL. Born on July 14th 1942, to the late George and Dorothy Dunbar (Barnett), Darlene lived a life marked by devotion to her family and friends.

Darlene was the beloved wife of the late George J. Ballantine, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and companionship until his passing in 2014.

Her legacy continues through her loving sons George W. Ballantine (Yolanda) and James Ballantine.

She took immense pride in her role as a grandmother to Nick Ballantine, Alyssa Alberico, and Ryne Alberico, and as a great-grandmother to Emilia Alberico, Julian , Damian and Adrian Narez.

Her special bond with her niece, Paula Dixon who provided unwavering care until Darlene's last moments, is a testament to the deep connections she fostered with her family.

Darlene was a cherished sister, preceded in death by her siblings Dorothy Olsen, George, Harold, Art, Francis, Warren, Harry, Jerry, Barbara and Robert Dunbar. Her memory will be treasured by her surviving brother Roy Dunbar and sister Mary Quirk.

Before devoting herself full-time to her family, Darlene spent seven years with Rustcraft greeting cards, where her creativity and warmth brightened the lives of both colleagues and customers. She made lifelong friends in the late Cecil, Mary and Helen Palmer while working there.

Her transition to a stay-at-home mom allowed her to pour her loving, kind and thoughtful nature into the upbringing of her children, creating a nurturing home filled with joy and laughter.

Darlene embodied the teachings of compassion and charity, leaving behind a legacy of kindness that touched the hearts of all who knew her.

As we bid farewell to Darlene, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a spirit that will continue to inspire others. Her unwavering love and the tender memories shared will forever be etched into the hearts of her family, friends and all who were blessed to cross paths with her. Darlene's journey on Earth may have concluded, but the impact of her gracious soul will resonate for generations to come.
