Obituary

On April 13, 2024, Christopher "Chris" Mark Crane of Palm Beach, FL, and formerly of Chicago IL, passed away at 65 years old.

Chris was born in Franklin, New Hampshire to Mary P. Crane (Nee Caulfield) and James J. Crane, Jr. The family traditions, passed on from his grandparents who had immigrated from Ireland, placed high value on hospitality and generosity. Their family home was a warm and happy gathering place for friends and family. From an early age, Chris had a curious mind, always wanting to figure out how things worked. He was known for being a loyal friend, devoted son, and supportive brother. Recognized also as the family peacemaker and a 'safety net," Chris always showed up when called upon to help. Most of all, Chris loved and cared for his mother to her last days.

Chris went on to become a self-made man who achieved incredible things professionally and made the world a better place.

After years of working his way up from the ground level, Chris served as President and Chief Executive officer of Exelon Corporation from 2012 until his retirement. He has been described by his successor as an "industry giant with a list of accomplishments that chart the growth and success of both the energy generation and utility businesses…. He helped expand our thinking on how an energy company could affect the greater good, launching programs that make up the fabric of Exelon's culture today." Chris was an advocate for the community, the climate, diversity, and he was passionate about supporting STEM careers for young women. His dedication to customers and community were unprecedented. Chris held leadership roles on numerous Boards and industry groups over the years where he fiercely advocated for safe, reliable, clean energy.

Chris loved big and never met a stranger. He was a down to earth guy who never lost his New England roots and sensibility. It was easy to make him laugh or teary eyed. Those fortunate enough to have known Chris understood the depth of his character. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. He was also a historian, lover of animals, world traveler, sports enthusiast, collector of rare books, chef, golfer, and proud Captain of his boat, aptly named, Good Energy. Chris never missed an opportunity to chat it up and dance barefoot either by the pool or at home while cooking. Chris always stepped in to help anyone in need and had the uncanny ability to make people feel heard.

Chris's retirement years were filled with joy, sharing every day with his beloved wife, Jillian, and their fur baby, Henri, while together building lasting memories with close family and friends.

The outpouring of love, prayers, and tributes upon his death are a testament to the impact this miraculous man had on people's lives. Although our family will miss Chris terribly, we also take solace in knowing that his was a life well lived.

Chris has been memorialized in his hometown alongside predeceased family at the Franklin City New Hampshire cemetery. Additionally, a private burial and celebration of life will be held.
