Chalmers "Chuck" Smith, age 68 of Zion, IL passed away after a lengthy illness on October 23,
2023. Chuck was born to parents Claudetta Smith Roman and Chalmers L. Smith II on October 1,
1955. Chuck was the second eldest of five boys.
Chuck received most of his early education as a Chicago Public School District student. As a boy
he was high ranking in the Boy Scouts of America and served as a crossing guard. In 1972, the
family relocated to North Chicago, IL. Chuck graduated from North Chicago Community High
School in 1973 as a Warhawk. He immediately built lifelong relationships in the "No-Go"
neighborhood.
Chuck was a longtime fan of the Chicago Bears Football Team. He liked watching movies,
especially action films. Chuck initiated debates on any topic and was good at it. He was a
connoisseur of all types of music. Chuck enjoyed jam sessions listening to music and singing
along. Chuck loved to play cards and was a member of the Bone Masters Domino Group. He
made friends all over the Lake County area and would give the shirt off his back to help others.
Chuck was a kind man.
Chuck was employed at The Grove At The Lake Nursing Home in Zion, IL and later at Captain
James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, IL. He followed in his mother's
footsteps and served Lake County, IL for many years as a Poll Worker and later as an Election
Judge.
Chuck knew he was blessed by God. Although he did not speak a lot due to his illness, Chuck
clearly stated his salvation by God.
Chuck never married or had children. He is survived by his loving brothers, Waymon (Eddie)
Henry of Franklin, IN and Terrence (Amanda) Smith of Gurnee, IL and several nieces and
nephews, Trenell Smith; Erica Smith; Arius Smith; Miles Henry; Marissa Williams; Richard Harris;
Alexis Bratton; Ahmani Smith and Ashtyn Smith. Also mourning Chuck's loss is a special friend,
Sylvia Bertrang of Eau Claire, WI and many family members and friends that would check in on
him regularly.
Chuck was proceeded in death by his mother Claudetta Roman and two brothers Anthony
Smith and Mark Roman, father Chalmers L. Smith II and stepfather John Roman.
Chuck will be honored on Saturday November 4, 2023 with a memorial service at S.T.U.D.Y.S.
Ministries Church in Lindenhurst, IL 60046. Friends and family will gather for visitation at 10:00
a.m. and service at 11:00 a.m.
