In Loving Memory of Berlinda Diane Brown

Berlinda Diane Brown was born in Mississippi and later made Chicago, Illinois her home. She attended Alcorn State University in Mississippi, where she pursued nursing. Those who knew her recognized her caring spirit and desire to help others.

After moving to Chicago, Berlinda built her life and later married Freddy Bell. During his service in the Vietnam War and the hardships that followed, including his incarceration after returning home, Berlinda experienced profound heartbreak and a deep sense of abandonment. Those experiences left emotional wounds that would shape much of her life.

As she searched for love, acceptance, and stability, Berlinda encountered people and situations that were harmful to her. Following a traumatic experience, she began struggling with serious mental health challenges that led to many years of treatment and stays in mental health facilities. Through it all, her illness never defined who she was at her core.

Berlinda had a beautiful smile, a kind heart, and a love for fashion. She loved getting dressed and always took pride in her appearance. More than anything, she was a survivor. No matter what life placed in front of her, she found a way. She refused to let her circumstances define who she was. Her strength, resilience, and determination carried her through some of life’s hardest moments.

Berlinda was the oldest of seven siblings. She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Jean Brown; her grandparents, R. C. Brown and Ora Lee Brown; her siblings Robert Earl Brown, Nathaniel Brown, Michael Brown, and Lora Brown-Dylong; and her beloved son, Amis Brown, who passed away on December 24, 2019.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sons Steven Brown, Freddie Brown, Prentis Brown, and Kirk Brown; her brother Nathan Brown of Chicago, Illinois; her sister Brenda Brown of Decatur, Illinois; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and many dear friends.

Though Berlinda’s life included many hardships, she never lost her worth. She leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, love, and strength. Her memory will live on in all who knew and loved her. May she rest in eternal peace.
