Obituary

Benjamin "Ben" Finley, aged 82, passed away on September 3, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois due to complications that led to cardiac arrest. Born on February 27, 1942, in Helena, Arkansas, to the late Benjamin and Vassie Finley, Ben was a cherished father, mentor, and friend to many.

A proud graduate of Crane Tech High School, Ben went on to further his education at the American Institute of Engineering and Technology. His lifelong passion for mechanics and structure guided him to a fulfilling 28 year career as a welder and later as a Quality Inspector at the Electromotive Division of General Motors. Ben's dedication to his work was matched only by his commitment to excellence and integrity, traits that greatly endeared him to his colleagues and associates. Ben's life was rich with interests and hobbies that kept his mind sharp and his spirit young. He was an avid reader who could often be found immersed in a book, a habit that fueled his wisdom and intelligence. His love for working out and playing basketball showcased his belief in the importance of maintaining physical health, while his enjoyment of chess reflected his strategic and thoughtful nature. Ben's love for music and movies provided a soundtrack and backdrop to many memorable moments in his life. Known for sense of humor, Ben could light up a room with his wit, bringing laughter and joy to those around him. His conversations were always meaningful, peppered with the wisdom of experience, yet always open to learning from others. He was a man who cherished the walks and talks that deepened his connections with friends and loved ones.

Ben was a beloved husband to Bertha, father to Audrey, Benjamin Jr., Steven, and Margaret ("Milandi'). He also stood as a father figure to Natalie and Charan, guiding them through life's challenges with kindness and love. His children remember him as a pillar of strength and a fountain of advice, whose legacy of wisdom and humor will live on in their hearts. He was a grandfather to Brande', Benjamin, Bryan, Bianca, and Serena and a great grandfather to Destiny and Ramari. In his life, Ben exemplified the well-known quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." Ben's authenticity and unique character were his greatest accomplishments, and they inspired all who knew him to embrace their true selves. Ben Finley's life story is one of dedication, love, and laughter. He was a wise man who shared his intelligence generously, a funny man who gave the gift of laughter freely, and a caring man who loved deeply. Though he has left this world, his spirit remains a guiding light to his family and friends, who will continue to honor his memory by living the values he embodied every day.

A traditional obituary such as this cannot fully encapsulate the essence of a man like Ben, but it serves as a testament to the love and respect he garnered throughout his life. A life well-lived is a precious gift, and Ben Finley's life was indeed a treasure that enriched the lives of all who knew him.

Ben's family will hold a private ceremony to celebrate his life and the immeasurable impact he had on those around him. His loss is deeply felt, but the joy and wisdom he imparted will forever be a part of the lives he touched. Benjamin Finley's story is one of triumph, love, and the enduring power of a life well-lived. He will be profoundly missed.
