Obituary

Arthur Walter Stawinski, who went by Art, was born in Chicago on May 13th, 1944 to Tess Biegalski and Arthur Waldo. Tess was the daughter of Stansilaw and Martha (Ulatowska) Biegalski, both immigrants from Lakarty, Poland, which was a part of the German Empire when they emigrated in 1905. Arthur Waldo was himself an immigrant from Rodom, Poland, which was part of the Russian Empire when he emigrated in 1913. Art grew up in Phoenix where he excelled in academics, graduating as valedictorian from Phoenix Union High School in 1962 and winning a full ride to Stanford. Art graduated Stanford in 1966 and returned to Chicago to attend graduate school at Northwestern, from which he earned a PhD in Philosophy in 1970. Art lived in the Chicago area for the rest of his life, teaching at the Illinois Institute of Technology and Oakton Community College. He changed careers and worked as a software developer in the financial and healthcare sectors, specializing in the COBOL programming language for mainframes. Art married Sara Guernsey in 1966. Art and Sara had two children, Kathryn (born 1969) and Elizabeth (born 1971). Art and Sara divorced in 1977. In the late 1970's Art became politically active in the campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment, through which he met a young lawyer, Joy Fisher. Art and Joy married in 1979, and their son, Steven was born in 1982. Art and Joy lived together happily in their suburban Buffalo Grove home until Joy's death in 2007 of ovarian cancer. Around the same time, Art suffered his first stroke. After a heroic effort in rehab, Art had regained most of his capabilities, but a lingering cut to his visual field greatly reduced his speed at reading, writing, and interacting with a computer. Art's disability forced him to retire, but he made the most of his last decade by moving back to Chicago where he enjoyed an active social life. He often would visit with friends, attend a film discussion group, and take vacations. For his final years, he partnered with Joan Minsky, and they enjoyed these activities together. From 2018, Art's health took a turn for the worse. A spinal problem caused moving around to become painful. Soon, he was using a walker and could no longer drive a car. On the afternoon of February 13th, 2020, Art was hospitalized from a second stroke. Despite numerous new disabilities, Art remained alert and in high spirits, and his medical team believed that aggressive rehab would allow him to continue to live at home as he had been doing. But, it was not to be. Sometime during the overnight of February 18th-19th, Art suffered a third stroke which left him unconscious. After a period of observation with no improvement, Art returned to his longtime Buffalo Grove home, under the care of hospice services and his son, Steven. Art passed away peacefully in the early morning of March 2nd, 2020. Art is survived by his three children, Kathryn, Elizabeth, and Steven, and grandchildren. Among Art's grandchildren are Barry and Juniper (children of Steven and Hardee). A memorial will be held at a later date.
