Obituary

Anil Shah grew up with a large, loving family and a tightly-knit community in Singapore. His academic journey began at Raffles Institution, the country's most prestigious high school, and continued at the National University of Singapore. There, he excelled in engineering and was recognized as an Exxon scholar, an honor that paved the way for his illustrious career in the oil industry. Anil also served in the infantry division of the Singapore military, a period of his life he looked back upon with immense pride.

His life took a romantic turn when he proposed to Nickey Shah during their second meeting in Ahmedabad. This sparked a series of adventures for the couple that spanned from India and Singapore to California, where Anil attended Stanford Graduate School of Business and the couple welcomed their daughter, Archana, to Kuwait, Texas and Canada, before they settled down in Chicago to help raise their grandbabies.

Anil's notable career in the corporate finance and oil industry took him from the role of Senior Investment Advisor at Kuwait Petroleum Corporation to VP - Corporate Planning at GlobalSantaFe, VP & Treasurer at Transocean/GSF, and finally, VP & Treasurer at Suncor Energy, Canada's largest integrated energy company. This journey brought him and his family across the world, making lifelong friends and creating cherished memories along the way.

Throughout his life, Anil nurtured a passion for fitness, embracing a variety of sports from table tennis to squash and maintaining a dedicated workout regimen that persisted even into his challenging final year of life. His lifelong love of running reached a pinnacle when he was living in Houston where he ran several half-marathons and kept up a rigorous running routine of up to six miles a day well into his 60s.

Upon moving to Chicago, Anil discovered a new passion for golf, mastering the sport effortlessly. His zest for learning continued even during the pandemic when he took up the Indian classical flute while living with Archana and Neil. This skill he continued to hone until his last day, performing for his family the night before he passed, underscoring his remarkable determination and the passion that enabled him to excel at anything he committed to.

Anil passed away peacefully on July 18, surrounded by his adoring family — his beloved wife Nickey, daughter Archana and son-in-law Neil; cherished grandchildren Reva, Kabir, and Fitzgerald; adopted son Viral, and Anil's siblings, sisters Niveditta and Rita, and family by marriage, Bimal, Hemal, JD, Naina, Aku, and Prashant.

A memorial service is scheduled for 9 am on July 20, 2023, at 3517 N. Pulaski Road, Chicago, IL 60641. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Akshaya Patra (https://www.apusa.org/donate/) in Anil's honor.
