Obituary

George Feeney passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 8th, 2022 with his wife and daughter at his side. He was born on September 28th, 1932 to George and Elizabeth Feeney in Glasgow, Scotland. His older sisters, Sarah and Margaret, preceded him in death. An avid cyclist, he enjoyed the company of many others in the sport. Following his mandatory military service, George traveled to and lived in Australia for several years and visited other countries including France, Germany, India, Egypt and Italy. It was there he tried out for the 1960 Olympics as an amateur cyclist. Upon his return to Scotland, George began to plan his next travel adventure to America. Before he moved to the States, he met Catherine Burns and they were married on September 2nd, 1961. Together they settled in Evanston, IL and while they initially considered moving back "home" they eventually decided to become US citizens in 1976 - the year of the Bicentennial. George continued to enjoy travel and especially loved skiing and cycling in Colorado. George retired from the Facilities Department of Northwestern University in 2005 and was liked and respected by his peers. George leaves behind Catherine, his devoted wife of 60 years. He is survived by his daughter Adrianne (Jeff) Elbe and beloved grandchildren Evelyn, Macklin and Vivian, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00am on Monday, February 21st at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church located at 806 Ridge Ave. Evanston, IL 60202. Parking is behind the church and rectory and is accessible by the alley just south of the rectory off Ridge.
