Barbara Ataman, 95, passed away in Chicago in January. Barbara Alice Panzner was born in Detroit on December 29, 1924 to Anna (Justin) and John Panzner. The first of her family to go on to secondary school, Barbara attended Northern High School and The University of Michigan where she met her husband, Tarik. They married in 1948 and settled in Lansing where they lived together until Tarik's death in 2011. Barbara moved to the Chicago area, close to her daughter, in 2015. Barbara taught for many years in the Lansing School District after earning her Master's at MSU. She was also active in the Michigan Democratic Party and the Unitarian Universalist Church. Barbara and Tarik enjoyed traveling for many years in their retirement, summering in the Montague area, and wintering in Port Charlotte and Clearwater, FL where they had many dear friends, including those from university co-op days. Barbara is survived by daughters, Kathy of Silver City, NV and Susan (Mike Manuel) and son, John (Amy Marmer) of Cincinnati and lovingly remembered by many others including grandchildren, Aaron, Claire, Liana and Sylvie and great granddaughter, Shoshanna. A private memorial is planned in Montague in late spring..
